Read the statement in three passes

Check the period and opening figure

Confirm the account and statement period. Compare the opening balance with the previous statement’s closing balance.

Match each entry to a record

Check dates, descriptions, money in and money out. Flag duplicate or unfamiliar entries without removing them from your records.

Ask about the difference

Distinguish posted entries from pending items. Ask the SACCO about charges, holds and the amount actually available to withdraw.

MAKE IT CONCRETE

Example: checking a closing balance

A learning example only. Real statement formats and transaction descriptions can differ.

Opening balance
40,000 RWF
Money in
+ 25,000 RWF
Withdrawals
− 10,000 RWF
Example recorded charge
− 500 RWF
54,500 RWF closing balance

40,000 + 25,000 − 10,000 − 500 = 54,500. The 500 RWF charge is hypothetical. Confirm the actual available balance with the SACCO.
